13.5" (343mm) Round Wheel Mod for C5

Cammus C5 Wheel Upgrade I wanted a larger round wheel to more closely match my IRL car. I purchased a 343mm(13.5”) generic wheel off ebay (was sold as 14”). I referenced 3DRAP’s install video for the basics of the install process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WtuMoxFEAQ One quick note is that the trim pieces over the dpad/abcd buttons were stuck on with very strong white tape or glue in my case. I was afraid of breaking them, so I drilled through to make my cover screws accessible without removing them, but they chipped in the process. Ideally, I should’ve used a hair dryer to soften the adhesive & continued trying to pry them off. My button PCB cable was also secured with white silicone. Otherwise, I fully followed the video. For reference, I weighed both the original rim & the new rim (after drilling). Old rim: 851g New rim: 919g

I punched holes in heavy paper to mark the drill patterns from the old rim. Both rims included standard 6 x 70mm bolt patterns, so I used that as a reference to locate the new holes. Note, the cutouts for the paddle wires don’t have to be slots. I just used a drill bit large enough to fit the connector. After drilling, I test fit the wheel and marked the trim ring where it interfered with the new spokes. I used a coarse metal file to fit the trim ring over the new wheel, & a fine half round file for deburring everything. WARNING: thoroughly clean any metal shavings from the wheel and trim ring before test fitting to avoid possible damage.

The new wheel plate is thicker than the Cammus one, & not 100% flat. When I attempted to install it with the original hardware, I didn’t have enough clearance to reinstall the button box PCB. I had to countersink the 3 mounting holes for flathead screws, trim the tabs from the rotary switches, & use kapton tape to prevent any short circuits. Take care not to pinch the paddle wires when closing everything back up.

The original rim is definitely higher quality, but the new size & almost round shape feel much better for my use. I’m still looking for a nicer quality (ideally leather wrapped) 3 spoke wheel with a totally flat hub design for a longer term upgrade. This works well until I find it.

This is an awesome mod — really appreciate you taking the time to document the whole process in such detail.

We totally understand the goal of moving to a larger, more round wheel to better match a real car feel, and it’s great to see how you approached it step by step. The weight comparison, drilling method using the original rim as a template, and the notes about PCB clearance and insulation are especially helpful for others who might want to try something similar.

Also really appreciate you pointing out things like the strong adhesive on the trim pieces and the importance of cleaning metal shavings — those small details can save a lot of trouble for others.

From our side, just to add for anyone attempting this:

  • Using heat (like a hair dryer) to soften adhesive is definitely the safer approach
  • Extra care with insulation (like you did with Kapton tape) is very important
  • And making sure there’s no stress on the PCB or paddle wiring when reassembling

Really curious — how does the new wheel feel in terms of control and FFB compared to the original? Does the larger diameter change your driving style much?

If you’re open to it, we’d love to feature your setup as a community highlight — this kind of detailed mod is super valuable for other users.

Thanks again for sharing this!
