My entry for the DIY Mod Showcase.
The C5’s round rim is part of the base, so there’s no quick release to swap it for a GT wheel. I wanted GT grips at nine and three for ACC and LMU, so I designed a kit that bolts around it instead.
What it is
- Two spoke plates close around the C5’s body and bolt to each other
- A ring clamps behind the original carbon face
- Two grip handles bolt to the plates
- The carbon face, display, all buttons, the 3 knobs, D-pad and paddles stay exactly where they were
- Uses the existing screw points – an Allen key and half an hour, and it comes off the same way
How it was made
I’m an architect, so it started the way I start everything: pen sketches of the grip profile, then sections through the handle to check wall thickness and where the hand actually sits. Then a full model in Revit around the C5’s real dimensions, then printing and racing on it, then fixing what was wrong.
Materials
- Spoke plates and ring: black PETG – a cockpit gets warm and PLA softens around 55 °C
- Grips: TPU. The infill took the longest: too dense and it feels like a plastic tube, too open and it squashes. I printed the same handle over and over until one felt right
- Button and knob caps: PLA, in glow-in-the-dark
The load still goes through the C5’s own aluminium body and carbon face; the printed parts only add the GT shape. I’ve
been racing on mine for months.
Also on the wheel: taller caps for the buttons and knobs, easier to find by feel, and a quiet Noctua 40 mm fan mount for the stock fan.
Happy to answer questions about the fit or the print settings.
