C5 - Time to Own Up!

So, who was it? Who is responsible?
I love my C5, but had to take it apart again this morning as the left shifter had stopped working (again). Who on earth came up with the position and design of the spring placement? A spring which has a mind completely of it’s own. There is an indentation for it, but will it stand in it? Not on your life. After about 60 goes at trying to to get the spring to stay in the right place, I gave up. It’ll have to shift WITHOUT A spring. Why does the shifter aperture have to be magnetised? Why is the indentation not 1-2 mms deeper and the spring 1-2 mms longer so that it will actually stay where you put it? Suggestions on a postcard about how to make this horrendous task easier!

Hey! Thanks for the feedback. Our support team has received your email on this issue. They will contact you soon and assist in resolving the issue.

Hi, I wanted to mod my c5, which version of the c5 do you have and how easy is it to open up? also I think you could maybe put some wood glue and stick the spring onto the pedals and put it on when it dries as it’s thin enough to not mess up the shift feel

Hi, I actually have two C5’s now as I bought an older version (with the crosshead paddle bolts) as a spare. Pretty easy to open up. I followed a video on YouTube - I’ll see if I can find you a link. The second time I did it it was a doddle. You’re bang on though about that glue. I used a tiny drop to hold the spring in place and it worked. I’ve changed the paddles three times now and the microswitch twice, so getting fairly expert!

This video is specifically for replacing the paddle microswitch (or just for replacing the paddles).

Ayyy, glad to hear that it worked out for you, I believe I have v2 or v3 of the cammus c5, any big difference between the two you own and after how long did the switches die? Used mine for around 300 ish hours and 7 months but had no issues.

I was thinking of opening up the cammus c5 and putting a larger wheel perhaps or a round wheel perhaps. I was thinking between a 12 inch one and a 350 mm one, I think the 12 inch one cammus sells is flat so I might get that tbh since the 350 is better quality but it’s not a flat dish wheel

I have a ‘red’ band wheel and a ‘yellow’ band wheel. I know the red band is earlier because of the paddle bolt (as the later ones have an allen key head). More than that I don’t know. I only got the second (earlier) one a couple of weeks ago as a spare when my left paddle microswitch went for the second time. The switch died for the first time after about 8 months and the second about 9 months later. It gets a lot of use though, I only drive LMU and I have nearly 2500 hours in that game, about 1800 of them with the Cammus (I had a G29 previously). I’ve no desire to change my wheel. I played for 20 years with a Red Momo Force and then the G29 so I’m perfectly comfortable with ‘round’ wheels. In fact, on turning tight corners, I personally need a round wheel. So I’ll be sticking with it as it is.

ah I see, I think I have the second version of the yellow band one. Haven’t put in as much time as you haha but usually switches have around a 1 million click life cycle so you probably passed it those times. And I see. I was wondering, why not go for the c12 or a stronger wheel or do you like the ffb and size of the cammus c5? I personally changed from a no ffb wheel to a logitech and then to my current c5 with the lc100s and it’s honestly been amazing. I don’t mind the D shape wheel but I am getting into rally and drifting and I’d like a round wheel. I’m wondering if I should have the sameish wheel with a full round wheel or a larger nicer wheel? I drive in acc so lmp and gt3 cars, have you tried other size wheels or bases other the 3 you previously owned?

To be honest splonki, I bought the C5 in about October 2024 and my wife effectively gave it to me as a Christmas present that year, so I didn’t use it until Christmas Day! I got a terrific deal on it and the pedal set from Racesim.net. I’ve done the factory updates to the pedals and have replaced the original paddles on the C5 with the factory supplied metal ones. I have thought about upgrading but I’m an old boy (69 years old) and I just don’t need a fancy rig. I have the wheel on an office desk with a single widescreen monitor, sitting on an office chair. It works fine for me. I’m DRS1 and SRP3 in LMU and have done over 880 online races. I’ve only owned 4 wheels, my original non-FFB yellow Logitech which I bought to play Grand Prix Legends about 26-27 years ago, the red Momo Force (which at the time was a state of the art wheel), then when that started to die, the G29 and finally the C5. I know it’s only 5Nm but that’s more than enough for me as I run my FFB light anyway. If you run LMPs and GT3s in ACC you really ought to get LMU - it’s a fantastic sim.

Ah I see, I understand why you’d try to keep it in the upmost condition. I also got mine on a steal and my friend got it for me so I was really happy with how it is. I might upgrade to the c12 or something cheaper with 8-15nm of force. I’m thinking of getting LMU in the future to try it out because it looks really good. What got you into sim racing if you don’t mind me asking? For me it was just buying a 60 dollar non ffb wheel like 10 years ago and just fooling along with it and having the time of my life. I understand the 5nm statement too because more might be sometimes better but it really gets the job so I can’t complain at all

Well, I’ve always been into motor racing. My father took me to Goodwood to see the likes of Stirling Moss when I was small, then when I was older I used to take myself to various circuits. In 1986 I went to the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time. Since then I’ve been every year apart from 2020 and 2021 (thanks Covid!). Next Monday I’ll be leaving for France for my 39th Le Mans….

I started sim racing purely by chance. I picked up a computer magazine which had a demo disc for Grand Prix Legends. It wouldn’t play on my computer, so I upgraded it. I tried to use a gamepad but it was hopeless, hence I bought the first Logitech wheel and a dedicated Voodoo graphics card. The rest is history. I played GPL all the time and was actually quite decent with a GPLRank of around -35. In fact I was playing GPL from about 2000 (including in leagues) and was still driving it when I heard about LMU in February 2024. I got it straight away and haven’t looked back. I tried AC and PC1 and PC2 but they were pretty dull - certainly in comparison to LMU. If you want to race Le Mans type sportscars, LMU is the only real deal. I’m not very quick although I did manage to win 2 online races this week - unusual for me…. For me, the C5 just feels right.

That’s so cool to hear! Hope you enjoy your Le Mans watch. I sorta started with midnight club 3 and then gran turismo. I like controlled grip alot and rally had that for me alot. f1 and single seater racing feels a bit too gamey for me so I absolutely love rally and LMP cars. Parttook in my country’s sim racing nationals and the toyota GR010 is an absolute dream to drive. I understand what you mean about AC. I’d say you could try low fuel racing if you want but since you have LMU, I don’t think you need to. I’m thinking of upgrading my laptop so I can run games better, so I’ll probably get it on August ish. What about on track racing? Have you tried it before? I want to go onto a track and get a feel for it once and would be tons of fun

Sadly I’ve never raced, although I’ve driven around a few tracks, Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Thruxton and Le Mans - every year for the last 15 years or so - at least the parts the public can get to…..
